This is evidence that Norman feels alienated from all of the people he in his life. He tries to justify and compensate the loss by questioning and answering himself.

The author expresses the need to talk about the horrific nightmares when he says: Weather the stories have a point or not, the need to tell them to someone after they appear in a dream is a way of coping with the stress disorder. Flashbacks are another symptom of PTSD.

The nightmares or recollections may come and go, and a person may be free of them for weeks at a time, and then experience them daily for no particular reason. Rat takes his anger out on a baby water buffalo by shooting it innumerable times.
